How your donation help

Mining activities in Hong Kong in the 50s and 60s were popular. The Ma On Shan Iron Mine was one of the biggest iron mines in Southeast Asia. The iron ores produced were mainly imported to Japan. In the heyday of the mine village lived more than 3000 miners. A total of around 10,000 people, including the family members of the miners, were living on the mountain of Ma On Shan, which created a unique neighborhood.

Evangelical Lutheran Yan Kwong Church was built in 1952. This Grade III Historical Building which provided kindness and education work to miners and their families was consisted of 5 separate buildings, including the Lutheran primary school, church, kindergarten, relief store and teachers’ quarters. It bore the rich history of Hong Kong mining history, as well as the lifestyle and culture of the mine village. Along with the moving out of the villagers after the closedown of the mines, the buildings were converted into Grace Youth Camp. However, due to the damage caused by the landslides, it was closed down since the 90s.

Now, the revitalization project stage 1 is completed. We have renovated three of the buildings and revitalized them as Grace Youth Camp today. It was opened in early 2015, presenting the ways of life miners and village with a miner-themed Café, activity rooms and campsites, where the public can discover and learn about Ma On Shan.

Collecting oral history: to visit the important figures, including the old miners, clergies, teachers and students of the village school and record down their lives in the village, as well as the stories of the mines; to carry out conservation and community education works, which allow continuous interactions between the mines and the mine village.

Below is one of the written stories:
Ko Mui HO had been working with her husband in Iron Mine starting from 1950. Although life was very hard, they lived happily with their children. Later, she got support from church and received baptism from pastor. She became deacon of the past Yan Kwong Church afterward. One of her duty was to knock the bell in tower to remind congregation the beginning of oncoming worship. On the date of Grace Youth Camp’s Opening Ceremony, we invited madam Ho aged 92 at that time holding the bell ceremony for revitalized church and re-rang the bell in this once disuse church. A year later, madam Ho passes away. On her deathbed, she said one of the most happiness things in her life was to return Yan Kwong Church again and met the former villagers.
Mine’s human touch is accumulated by Madam Ho, Old miners and villagers bit by bit. We hope we can find more mine’s important figures in the future and record the people and stories in the past mine village before being forgotten.

Revitalization stage 2: Upgrading and waterproofing work of the remaining two buildings: the kindergarten and relief store will be carried out to provide more space and build a permanent exhibition venue for the presentation of the unique history and story of Ma On Shan.

City development: Ma On Shan has become a densely populated new town. Every of the stories should be kept, whether it is about the prosperous Ma On Shan City at the bottom of the mountain, the unique mining history of the hills, or the days that the miners endured in the mountains. Please support us. Let us keep this remarkable history and pass down the human values of the mines together.
